LOPEZ RAMIREZ, Mónica  e  ESQUIVEL CORDERO, Paola Ximena. Student Characterization of Different Kinds of Higher Education Institutions in Mexico. Rev. latinoam. estud. educ. [online]. 2021, vol.51, n.3, pp.71-96.  Epub 20-Out-2023. ISSN 2448-878X.  https://doi.org/10.48102/rlee.2021.51.3.408.

Despite the growing integration of students into Higher Education Institutions (IES) in Mexico, there are still delays in access and coverage. Aggregate information on these students is available, but there is no national information on their socioeconomic characteristics and pre-university training. This article aims to describe and contrast the socioeconomic, sociodemographic, and academic characteristics of students of different types of IES in the country. For this purpose, we analyzed data from the Intergenerational Social Mobility Module (MMSI) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) through descriptive statistical techniques. The results show considerable differences between public and private institutions, regarding the students’ skin tone self-enrollment, the level of schooling attained by their parents -greater among those who studied in elite private institutions-, as well as continuity in a sector (public/private) during their training until entry to higher education.

Palavras-chave : university students; students’ profiles; higher education institutions.
