This essay makes a descriptive approach to the concept of citizenship and citizenship education from the point of view of social and educational theory. It establishes relationships between these concepts and other central theoretical categories of thesocial sciences, such as democracy, republicanism, and power, with the ultimate goal of enabling theoretical reflection on the conception and practice of citizenship education today.
