Geriatric oncology melds the fields of oncology and geriatrics in order to implement an individualized interdisciplinary approach to older adults with cancer. The main objective of geriatric oncology is to personalize the treatment and follow-up of older patients, with the intention of maximizing the benefits of treatment, controlling comorbidities, reducing toxicity, and increasing survival. This is achieved by conducting a comprehensive geriatric assessment, which explores various domains such as functional status, nutritional status, cognition, comorbidities, and the presence of geriatric syndromes. This exhaustive assessment allows for the detection of deficits not found in a routine oncological evaluation and can help to predict overall survival and chemotherapy-related toxicity. Additionally, it can lead to potential interventions and guide therapeutic decision-making according to the needs of each patient. In this article, we review the current applications of geriatric oncology in daily clinical practice, focusing on the implementation of international recommendations, and emphasizing those that can be carried out in Mexico.
