VIVAS RODRIGUEZ, Marta E.; CANTERO SANCHEZ, Francisco Javier e SALADO NAVARRO, Vanesa. The communication of the psychologist through the cinema: analysis of the filmic stereotype. Rev. panam. comun. [online]. 2022, vol.4, n.1, pp.155-173. Epub 27-Jun-2022. ISSN 2683-2208. https://doi.org/10.21555/rpc.v4i1.2559.
This work is built on the assumption that cinema is a source of great interest for analyzing the image of psychologists troughout time. The way this professionals have been represented in films is the main source for the creation of stereotypes. We have two main goals: to analyze the way psychologists are represented in cinema since 1930, and, therefore, to identify the basic stereotypes that have been formed and transmitted to society. We have analyzed, using a qualitative method, the evolution of the different psychology schools, settings, techniques and the social image of the psychologist. As results, we found a growing number of valid films along time, their relation with certain kinds of movies, clinical psychologists as the main victims of film sterotypes, ambiguity between psychology and other disciplines and an agreement of our results with those from Sneider and Gabbard. In conclusion, cinema has created a stereotype around our profession that affects it. A greater effort for scientific communication is needed.
