Hyperventilation syndrome (HS) is characterized by symptoms related to anxiety disorder, altering quality of life and requiring a biopsychosocial approach for diagnosis and treatment. Case report: A 26-year-old male with depressive disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse, who attended the emergency department with nausea, dyspnea, and respiratory alkalosis. HS was diagnosed. Conclusions: HS requires a multidisciplinary approach, where the family doctor has an important role in understanding person as an essential bio-psycho-social being in the health-disease process.
