GARIBAY-MONTANO, Andrea C.; ESPINOSA-CARDENAS, Raquel E. e SERRATO-ALUD, Roberto C.. Vascular graft infections by gram negatives: Breaking a literature paradigm. Rev. mex. angiol. [online]. 2022, vol.50, n.2, pp.43-49. Epub 05-Out-2022. ISSN 2696-130X. https://doi.org/10.24875/rma.21000048.
Background:
Vascular graft infections (VGI) are caused in 58% by gram positive bacteria and are associated with high morbidity and mortality.
Objective:
To characterize the microorganisms associated with VGI in patients operated at the Antonio Fraga Mouret Specialty Hospital.
Methodology:
Descriptive and cross-sectional study, from March 2015 to February 2021.
Results:
The most frequent procedure, associated with VGI was femoropopliteal bypass (36.2%), with synthetic graft (85.1%).The most isolated microorganisms were gram negative: Escherichia coli (42.55%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (34%). A significant relationship was found between the surgical site (arm or leg) and the microorganism involved (OR 9.07; 95% CI: 1.80-41.7; p = 0.02).
Conclusions:
Gram negative microorganisms are the main etiology of VGI in our population, which suggests that prophylaxis should be directed towards them. In contrast, the surgical site in the thoracic limbs is a risk factor for gram positive infection, so the antibiotic regimen for these patients is adequate.
