DIEZ-GUTIERREZ, Enrique-Javier e MUNIZ-CORTIJO, Lucía-María. Reggaeton Education. Can reggaeton teach us about inequality?. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2023, vol.45, n.179, pp.8-20. Epub 29-Maio-2023. ISSN 0185-2698. https://doi.org/10.22201/iisue.24486167e.2023.179.60295.
This research analyzes the values and vision on gender inequality transmitted through reggaeton songs, given their influence on the teenage-aged student body. Through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) methodology and through Maxqda software use, we analyzed the text of 64 of the most successful reggaeton songs of 2020, composed and sung by men. We sought to discover whether they were advancing equality between men and women or whether, on the contrary, they were reinforcing sexist stereotypes. Though this discussion compares the results of our analysis with other approaches and outlooks, we’ve concluded that commercial reggaeton portrays the most traditional stereotypes of machismo. We consider it imperative for educational spaces to incorporate a critical outlook on these products of our cultural industry, since they can powerfully influence our youth and establish their references and values.
