REYES PEREZ, Juan José et al. Growth and development of basil ( Ocumum basilicum L.) varieties under conditions of salinity. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.1, pp.35-45. ISSN 2395-8030.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is highly variable in terms of tolerance to salt stress, and it is considered to be sensitive to salinity in early growth. The establishment of morphometric indicators of crop tolerance to salt stress is important for recommending which variety farmers can grow most productively under saline conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of NaCl on growth and development of basil plants. Twenty varieties were grown under a shade mesh structure and subjected to three treatments: 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl. The experimental design was completely randomized with factorial arrangement and four replications. Stem length (cm), root length (cm), fresh and dry weight of root, stem, leaf (g) and leaf area (cm2) were measured. The results showed that varieties Sweet Dani and Dolly produced higher values for stem and root length, while Napoletano had higher fresh and dry weights of root, stem and leaf. Sweet Dani showed greater leaf area.
