NAVA ESCUDERO, César. Water desalination and energy justice. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Cuest. Const. [online]. 2022, n.47, pp.243-272.  Epub 12-Maio-2023. ISSN 1405-9193.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iij.24484881e.2022.47.17529.

This paper explains the importance of water desalination as an option to worldwide water scarcity. Since those methods used to obtain desalinated water normally consume conventional energies, it proposes that this activity must be realized with energy justice, i mean, energy that is affordable, efficient, sustainable, and renewable. The foregoing to observe the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development targets related to goal 6: “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”, as well as to goal 7: “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all”. A review is made of both the experiences of water desalination and the concept of “energy justice”. It concludes noting that desalination at any energy cost and conventional or renewable energy consumption at any socio-environmental cost are not sustainable alternatives.

Palavras-chave : water desalination; energy justice; renewable energy; sustainability; Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
