The economic valuation of a natural resource is not an easy topic, as it is believed that these resources do not have monetary value, however, it is necessary to carry out economic exercises that help to plan and reduce the social and environmental impacts as well as provide guidance in the economic development of rural communities. As a way of lowering the environmental impact in the forest area the present research is carried out to measure de economic impact of firefly tourism in Nanacamilpa and proposes an increase in the entrance fee based on the tourists’ willingness to pay according to the Zonal Travel Cost methodology as a proposal to support the sustainable tourism development. It concludes that the tourism arriving to Nanacamilpa exceeds the capacity of services and attention currently on offer, and the impact in the forest during the firefly’s reproduction stage affects the sustainability of the species. The increase of the entrance fee would reduce the number of tourists visiting the area but can be compensated with the improvement in the services offered in both the sanctuaries and the settlement.
