In recent years, processes as globalisation have impacted in such way into the involved countries that, local and regional aspects have acquire great relevance. A proof of it, is the proliferation of books and studies that analyse and clarify the differences between global and regional processes through a great variety of methodologies and indicators. However, the use of techniques such as Spatial Econometrics is not wide diffused in regional research in Mexico. Then the objective of the present paper is to explain the main characteristics of the Spatial Econometrics in order to widespread its practical utility, contributing in that way to a better understanding and use of this techniques, among its main contributors we find the Anselin's (1988) works. To do that, after introducing some of the main theories related to regional science and showing the lack of studies of this type in the Mexican case, it is realized a brief review of the background of Spatial Econometrics. In the same way, we underline the spatial effects in which this econometrics focuses, we expose the way in which such effects are incorporated in spatial models, and the main tests to detect and contrast them. Finally we show the main typologies of spatial models more used in recent literature and the final considerations are set down.
