The traditional P'urhépecha song, the pirekua, was declared an Intangible World Heritage Treasure by the UNESCO. The decision was received enthusiastically by the Michoacán state government, institutions, and P'urhépecha musicians. However, it also sparked a conflict in which pirériecha (pirekua singers) and P'urhépecha musicians, mainly from rural communities participated. This article looks into how the UNESCO declaration was interpreted by the pirériecha and P'urhépecha musicians, and what caused the affront and why it spurred them to organize to express their disagreement. The author analyzes the conflict using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of the field.
