This article reviews some interpretations presented in recent years of the crisis of democracy, contrasting them with the existing empirical information on the matter. The author proposes using the explanatory model of the crisis of legitimation Jürgen Habermas developed in the early 1970s to understand the existing disillusionment with the democratic political system. The central idea is that we cannot understand the crisis of liberal democracy if we do not look at it from a holistic, interdisciplinary perspective. This is what Habermas did when he referred to the economic crisis, the crisis of administrative rationality, and of motivation as analytical components of the broader crisis of legitimation, in the framework of a capitalism that has undergone drastic transformations due to the flexible accumulation regime.
