This article is an approach to the sociology ofJohn Rex through his reflection on the issues of race, class and ethnicity in the context of the transformations undergone by England from a colonial regime to a multicultural society with migrants from former African, Caribbean and Asian colonies. It begins with an introduction describing John Rex's contributions to social theory and the study of ethnic relations and continues with an account of his approach to sociology, the racial struggles in South África and what was then known as Southern Rhodesia, the workers' and pacifist movement in England, and the convergence of these experiences with his current interest in the multicultural policies of post-migrant England.
