VARELA-HUERTA, Amarela e PARIS POMBO, Dolores. Migratory boundaries and post-caravan becomings in northern Mexico. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2023, vol.85, n.1, pp.199-228. Epub 10-Fev-2023. ISSN 2594-0651. https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2023.1.60419.
Based on an ethnographic study of the Central American exodus since 2018, this article explores the governmentality devices established by the Mexican and US administrations during and after the so-called “Autumn of the Caravans”, when thousands of people organized to challenge migration policies in the region. It analyzes confinement and exclusionary tactics as well as the indefinite waiting systems implemented to deter the search for asylum. It explains how migrant caravans were dispersed and how transmigrants who had walked with them were condemned to waiting outdoors, returned to the “shadows”, or illegalized.
