This article analyzes the process of students’ passage through secondary school, and the implication of that passage on the construction of meanings leading to the configuration of identity. The basis is an ethnographic study carried out in a public secondary school that is located in a low-class area of the state of Estado de México. Empirical support is provided by interviews with 34 students at the school. The analysis is guided by three research questions: What elements of daily life at school influence the process of negotiating meanings and configuring identity? How is that negotiation of meanings present at the different moments of passage through the school? Which affiliations are present in that passage, and what do they mean in the configuration of identities?
