RMIE [online]. 2008, vol.13, n.38, pp.843-864. ISSN 1405-6666.

This study explores the employment satisfaction of academics. To do so, a questionnaire was completed by a random stratified sample of 435 professors at Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes. Two types of satisfaction were considered: global and by facets. The results show that 91% of the professors are satisfied with their job, yet satisfaction by facets is lower than global satisfaction; only 53% are satisfied with their salary and 61.5% with their employment stability. Having a teaching vocation (66%) and interest in educating new generations (60%) are intrinsic motivators for remaining at the institution. Taking working conditions into account, 78% are satisfied with their academic freedom, while only one-half of the respondents are satisfied with their participation in decision-making, their available time for continued education, the quality of students, and the institution's administration.

Palavras-chave : higher education; academic personnel; on-the-job satisfaction; professional satisfaction; academic work; Mexico.
