CAZARES ALONSO, Norma Patricia et al. Molecular description and essential oil production of (Lippia sp.) genotypes. Rev. mex. de cienc. forestales [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.1, pp.85-94. ISSN 2007-1132.

In order to preserve and use the genetic resources of the arid and semi-arid and arid lands of Mexico, 35 wild and 6 cultivated samples of Lippia sp. (oregano) from General Cepeda, Ramos Arizpe, Parras de la Fuente and Matamoros in Coahuila State were analyzed. The molecular description was made through Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Simple Sequences Repeated (SSR). In addition, the quantity and quality of essential oils was determined by means of the drag technique by steam and high resolution liquid chromatography. RAPD and SSR markers were able to detect a high level of polymorphism in oregano. However, it was not possible to differentiate the whole assessed collections as well as to gather them in regard to location. In contrast, it was determined that the genetic diversity was mild (47%) and higher among populations. Some samples showed high values of carvacrol while thymol was very heterogeneous among populations. It is concluded that there is enough variation in the oregano from Southeast Coahuila and it is feasible to select those materials that can increase the essential oil production.

Palavras-chave : Essential oils; carvacrol; oregano; RAPD; SSR; thymol.
