COVARRUBIAS, Arlette e ARANA LOPEZ, Felipe. Tendencies toward precarious work among wage-earning young people and adults in Mexico, 1995-2019. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2023, n.25, pp.241-276. Epub 27-Abr-2023. ISSN 2007-4964.
Young salaried workers have a higher degree of precarious employment than salaried adults. A precarious job is one that is uncertain, risky and unpredictable for the worker. From 1995 to 2019, the Mexican labour market had several transformations and was affected by three economic crises. This leads to question how the trajectory of young workers versus adults differs and how economic growth affects the precarity of their jobs. This study uses data from the Encuesta Nacional de Empleo (ENE) (1994-2004) and from la Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo (ENOE) (2005-2019) by INEGI, to answer these questions. An index of precarious employment is estimated each year for Young and adult salaried employees. The elasticity of the index of precarious employment due to an increase in the real GDP is also estimated for both groups. Differences by sex and level of education are explored throughout the analysis.
