PINA OSUNA, Francisco Manuel. Social characteristics of drug offense inmates in the State of Sonora. Nóesis, Rev. cienc. soc. [online]. 2020, vol.29, n.58, pp.106-133.  Epub 16-Jan-2023. ISSN 2395-8669.  https://doi.org/10.20983/noesis.2020.2.5.

The objective of this article is to describe social characteristics of a sample of subjects who committed drug trafficking crimes in the state of Sonora, Mexico. Through a descriptive statistic-based methodology and based on a new database arisen from a study of 371 records of persons imprisoned for this kind of crimes in the state of Sonora, Mexico. Findings shows that the major percentage is characterized by being related to drug sales and transportation activities, coming from urban contexts, having basic educational level, performing informal jobs without a fixed salary, and having criminal records and drug usage. Despite limitations such as the difficulty of generalizing data to non-confined samples and to other contexts, it is concluded that drugs offenses are linked to poor social conditions, a situation that tends to be reversed in favor of a more effective crime prevention.
