ALVARADO LEON, Claudia Itzel. Communication and circulation systems at Xochicalco, Morelos, Mexico. An. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.56, n.1, pp.33-46. Epub 05-Maio-2023. ISSN 2448-6221. https://doi.org/10.22201/iia.24486221e.2022.77606.
This paper analyzes two urban components of the entire built environment that constitutes the archaeological site of Xochicalco, Morelos: its communication and circulation systems. The main aim is to explain the connection between their design and organization in accordance with the interests of a hegemonical class that maintained its power for almost 500 years. In order to do so, I will apply some of the analytical tools from spatial syntax techniques, which have rarely been used in the study of Mesoamerican cities. This method is used to establish the ways in which buildings or cities are organized as a result of their social dynamics, taking into account the fact that the built environment is intrinsically linked to social relations. Through analyses of the location, configuration, and layout of the built environment, this paper will contribute to a better understanding of the social space of this Epiclassic settlement. The outcome allows us to comprehend the reasons behind Xochicalco’s urban planning solutions, proving that the divisions within the city were consistent with its social organization.
