CARBAJAL, N. e GALICIA-PEREZ, M. A.. Earthquake-Induced Helmholz Resonance in Manzanillo Lagoon, Mexico. Rev. mex. fis. [online]. 2002, vol.48, n.3, pp.192-196. ISSN 0035-001X.
On 9th October, 1995, at 9:36 local time, an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 occurred on the west coast of Mexico. The epicenter was located at 18° 51.5' N and 104° 8.4' W, at approximately 25 km of Manzanillo. This important commercial harbor is connected by a narrow channel to a lagoon. A tidal gauge recorded the forced oscillations occurred in the lagoon. A dominant period of 36 minutes was observed. Analytical solutions for ideal rectangular flat basins and numerical modeling for realistic geometries show that the lagoon and the channel produce a Helmholz resonance with a period similar to that observed in the earthquake.
