AGUILAR-MORALES, Alejandra; SANCHEZ-NAVA, Petra; AGUILAR ORTIGOZA, Carlos Jorge e RODRIGUEZ-ROMERO, Felipe. Morphometric variations of the genus Notocotylus (Digenea: Notocotylidae), parasite of waterfowl (Rallidae and Anatidae) in the Lerma marshes, Estado de México. Acta Zool. Mex [online]. 2022, vol.38, e3812402. Epub 19-Set-2022. ISSN 2448-8445. https://doi.org/10.21829/azm.2022.3812402.
The genus Notocotylus is a group of cosmopolitan endoparasites trematodes hosted in the intestinal caeca of birds and some mammals. It´s identification is based on anatomical, morphometric and host characteristics. In this study we used traditional lineal morphometry and geometric morphometryc analysis in some species of Notocotylus genus, which parasitize resident (Rallidae) and migratory (Anatidae) birds of the Ciénegas de Lerma, Mexico. For analysis, we formed groups according to species, host and locality. For study of the form, 20 reference points were analyzed, distributed in the shape of the organism and internal structures. Linear morphometric results suggest that group discrimination groups is based on total width, ovarian width, total length, and testicular width of the parasites. Geometric morphometry shows different morphotypes in the parasites of resident and migratory birds, as well as, an effect of locality. Finally, geometric morphometry provides significant results and can help improve the identification of species of the Notocotylus genus.
