BONILLA REYNA, Helia Emma. El Calavera: la caricatura en tiempos de guerra. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2001, vol.23, n.79, pp.71-134. ISSN 0185-1276.
Caricatures from the El Calavera newspaper document the internal conflicts Mexico experienced during one of the most critical times in its history (the war with the United States). Despite their simplicity, these works highlight the continued use of resources like dreams and allegories, which were present in literature and images dating from the end of the colonial period, throughout post-Independence, until the mid XIX century and beyond. Similarly, they indicate the persistent use of topoi, or paradigmatic motifs, that may well have been utilized previously in journalistic literature, everyday language and even rhetoric and European satire.
