FRASQUET, Ivana. The Decline of the First Mexican Empire Political Turmoil and Monarchical Plans in 1823. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2021, n.spe1, pp.193-221.  Epub 22-Mar-2022. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2021.1e.77720.

The abdication of Agustín de Iturbide to the throne in Mexico in 1823 and his subsequent exile unleashed political tensions that radicalized the ideological positions of those who wanted his return. The pro-monarchist popular mobilization and the federalist rupture in the provinces provoked a political crisis and uncertainty about the future of the country. The instability and lack of political definition throughout that year led to conspiracies aimed to keep the monarchical option alive, either by moderate positions or by the less known fully ultramontane ones. This work is aimed to approach some of these conspiratorial plans. To do this, some projects that have been neglected hitherto are examined and archival documentation that had not been previously analyzed is provided.

Palavras-chave : Agustín de Iturbide; Mexico; Conspiracy; Monarchy; Ultramontanism.
