This article describes an experiment in which the briefcase was introduced in a graduate class and the perceptions expressed by the students who did try out the construction and use of this assessment tool. The results of this pilot scheme show that students consider the briefcase as a tool that a) allows them to apprehend their progresses and achievements; b) encourages the reflection on their own learning; c) contributes to the synthesis and integration of the learned contents. However, they also notice that this procedure requires a lot of time and that its assessment is complicated. The results hint at the fact that the advantages are more important than the inconvenients that the briefcase system can imply; we should nevertheless take into account this limitations of the validity observed by the students in order to carry out a reflection that could improve this system in the future.
