PADILLA CALDERON, Esther. The Yaquis and flooding of the river. A history of the hydraulic control of the Yaqui River. Culturales [online]. 2017, vol.5, n.2, pp.67-106. ISSN 2448-539X.
The aim of this paper is to show how the flooding of the flowing and perennial Yaqui river affected in a nodal way the ancestral development of an Indian culture and sealed the modern development of the great valley formed in the lower river basin. Through the analysis of data obtained in primary and secondary sources, it is noticed that the importance of the flooding of the Yaqui River has been historically known by Yaquis as well as non-natives. This flood water “filled with silt” constituted the deltaic region of this river and fertilized important stretches of land. Its effects have been exploited by Yaqui natives and by some non-natives groups, at the time when a new stage of agricultural development of the Yaqui valley was made difficult, by destroying temporal irrigation infrastructure as well as permanently intended irrigation infrastructure.
