Sixty-seven species of 69 that have been recorded in the northwestern region of Mexico are commented. Additionally, 48 new species belonging to Photinus are described and illustrated, one of them is the first species described from Zacatecas. Two keys are presented, one to segregate the genera of Lampyridae, the other to identify the species of Photinus present in the region. Moreover, new state records are reported. Mexico is recognized as a diversification center of the genera Photinus.
