Objective: to analyze the information on rainfall that occurred from the 18th century to the second decade of the 21st century in Victoria de Durango, Mexico, through historical documentation contrasted with meteorological data, and the Risk Atlas from that city. Methodology: floods historical study, hydro-meteorological data observation, and interviews applied to city actors. Historical information, a product of documentary sources and interviews with historians, was combined with official sources. Results: characterization of damages and risks associated with floods, as well as their description, development and causes. Limitations: the Risk Atlas of Victoria de Durango does not provide historical information on disasters, damages and losses. Value: a flood zone map is drawn up, showing 100 years return periods, describing the phenomenon severity. Conclusions: the risk atlases must include documented evidence in historical archives, such as cartographic information, journalistic research and the historians’ knowledge.
