ARELLANO GALVEZ, María del Carmen. Food Sovereignty and Self-consumption: A Qualitative Study among Farmworkers Settled in Miguel Alemán, Sonora. Región y sociedad [online]. 2023, vol.35, e1799.  Epub 01-Mar-2024. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2023/35/1799.

Objective: is to analyze self-consumption practices as a contribution for farmworker’s population settled in Miguel Aleman, Sonora, Mexico. Methodology: With an ethnographic approach, from August to November 2021 and from February to March 2022, 23 semi-structured interviews and observations were conducted in a colony of the community inhabited by settled migrants and which is in the process of urbanization. Results: The practice of self-consumption makes it possible to have fresh and culturally appropriate food, and also gives new meaning to the identity of native peoples and peasants settled in agro-industrial communities. Value: The contribution is visualizing self-consumption as an emancipating practice in the face of the predominant consumption model. Limitations: Migrants who move between seasons and do not have land to cultivate are not included in the study. Conclusions: Self-consumption is a resistance strategy that contributes to the food sovereignty of the population.
