Objective:

To describe the main cultural factors (social capital), psychosocial factors (perception and expectation of benefits), socioeconomic factors and associated variables with maize production that affect the participation and degree of organization for agricultural activities of the relocated Chinanteco smallholders and local originals in the municipality of Tierra Blanca, Veracruz.

Methodology:

An observation guide, a semi-structured interview guide (key informant) and a structured questionnaire that was applied to relocated and original smallholders were designed. The information was analyzed with the IBM SPSS Statistics 19.

Results:

It was found that the cultural factor is key to the tendency to participate in organized groups. In the social factor, the norms and sanctions fulfill determining conditions for the degree of organization, as well as, the age of family head and number of members of the family. Regarding the perception of benefits, technical advice, access to machinery and technology were some relevant aspects that are relate to the organization and in the expectation to participate in groups, the transformation and sale, support management, access to machinery and technology were highlighted; it was also found that corn production is associated with the degree of organization of the producers.

Limitations:

Time, distance and financial resources to analyze the organizational factors of other producers.

Conclusions:

Between the two groups of smallholders, there are differences in participation and degree of organization, which is due to cultural factors, social factors (social capital), psychosocial factors (perception and expectation of benefits), socioeconomic and production factors.
