The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) is an intergovernmental organization in charge of regulating animal health worldwide. Areas such as epidemiology, transboundary animal diseases, zoonoses, emerging and re-emerging diseases, disease prevention and control programs are among the central elements from which the competences of the professions in this context will be built. Veterinary education is committed to review and include in its curriculum the specific competences of the WOAH. At the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, the methodology of analysis and debate on the competence that the veterinarian should possess was established based on scientific information related to animal health, together with existing teaching experience and preserving the approach proposed by the WOAH. The work supervised by experts in education, agreed to bring the debate closer to a possible consensus regarding the competences on animal health that the animal health veterinarian should have. The results emitted from the work tables of the academies and axes of the curriculum concluded the following: the competences that the new curriculum should contemplate are epidemiology, transboundary animal diseases, zoonoses, emerging and re-emerging diseases, disease prevention and control programs, food hygiene, veterinary products, animal welfare, veterinary legislation and ethics. In addition, general certification procedures and communication skills were other competencies that emerged from the consensuses, which contribute to the comprehensive training of the zootechnical veterinary doctor.
