Obesity also poses important long-term challenges such as high potential for negative impacts on the quality of life of an individual, prevalence of chronic diseases that reduces life expectancy, high cost of future medical care, all affecting future generations in terms of productivity (Trogdon, Finkelstein, Hylands, Dellea y Kamal-Bahl 2008). The prevalence of obesity and overweight in adults has increased significantly in recent decades, and the scientific community has accepted that the environment built by man has played a key role in it. This paper, of a critical reflective nature, is the result of a documentary research carried out on the essential review of publications produced mostly in the last 15 years. It will address the relationship between obesity and the built environment, as well as to how it can vary considerably, depending on the geographical area concerned -Europe, North or Latin America-, both mainly by the urbanization models followed, as well as by reasons of urban policies, cultural and idiosyncratic factors associated with this urbanization. While other studies emerge, it can be said that there is a lot of work to be done in terms of planning, urban design, and architecture, in the diffuse and compact neighborhoods.
