NAJERA RAMIREZ, Karla Gabriela  e  MARTINEZ VELA, Marlon. So far from God: The social function of the fantastic in northern Mexican narrative. Connotas. Rev. crit. teór. lit. [online]. 2022, n.25, pp.6-34.  Epub 02-Jun-2023. ISSN 2448-6019.  https://doi.org/10.36798/critlit.v0i25.410.

This paper identifies a particular treatment in fantastic short story tradition of northern Mexico. Its features correspond to those explained in Tzvetan Todorov’s The fantastic: a structural approach to a literary genre about the social function of the fantastic, which underlies at a deeper level than what is superficially perceived. To this end, this paper analyzes short stories that belong to different generations of writers from the mentioned region: Daniel Sada’s “Un cúmulo de preocupaciones que se transforma”; Eduardo Antonio Parra’s “Traveler Hotel” and “Los últimos”; Elpidia García’s “El conciliábulo de los halcones” and “Las ratas de la calle Babícora”; Gabriela Riveros’s “Ven por chile y sal”, and Néstor Robles’s “Llamada perdida”. This brief corpus reveals a series of difficulties that affect this part of Mexico that this literature seeks to highlight.

Palavras-chave : fantastic short story; northern Mexican literature; social function.
