Infections continue to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer patients, causing delays in the continuity of treatment and increasing healthcare costs. They can be caused by germs that gain access to sterile areas through epithelial barriers that are altered by chemotherapy and immunosuppression; with a mortality that varies between 14 and 42% according to different studies. Some non-pathogenic microorganisms, in other conditions, become pathogenic, triggering bacteremia and severe multiorgan dysfunction, as is the case presented below.
