INTRODUCTION
The year that we have just finished has been very difficult because of the pandemic and the confinement. For that reason, we have prepared a very special issue, which wants to celebrate first, the multiple teachings that we have acquired. Nevertheless, it is a different issue, because as you will read in the Introduction, it is about the ethical dilemma of mental disability. These articles were written after a colloquium on this topic, held by the International Association of Catholic Bioethics (IACB) in Ottawa in June 2019. The Academic Director, Dr. William Sullivan, requested our Magazine to be able to publish the articles, which after fulfilling the requirements for peer review, could be seen together in one issue of the Journal.
However, while they were being written, the pandemic struck. Thus, our perception of reality changed. We have seen that some values, that we hold in high esteem, are more important than others. Moreover, today we can conclude that vulnerability has knocked on our doors. In March of this year, the WHO pointed out that patients with disabilities are the most vulnerable. In addition, in this issue we can read about mental disability, which undoubtedly affects the decisions of those who suffer from it.
There is a different article from the rest and it is the one by Dr. Paulina Taboada: «A life for Bioethics». This charming article is about Professor Elio Sgreccia, who this year, on June 5, completed one year of death. The most important promoter of “Ontological Personalism for Bioethics” has left us such an important legacy that we will surely have the opportunity to read other articles about him.
I conclude this Editorial to introduce Dr. María Elizabeth de los Ríos Uriarte, who is the new Editorial Coordinator of Medicine and Ethics. She will continue to drive the growth of our periodical, since, in addition to her successful and great professional capacity, she has a deep interest and affection for our Magazine.
Yours faithfully.
