RAMIREZ-GONZALEZ, Homero e CENDEJAS-MOLINA, Jorge L.. Primary amputation on vascular trauma: Uruapan, Michoacan experiences. Rev. mex. angiol. [online]. 2023, vol.51, n.4, pp.118-124. Epub 16-Abr-2024. ISSN 2696-130X. https://doi.org/10.24875/rma.23000016.
Background:
Vascular trauma is a frequent pathology in contemporary life.
Objective:
To analyze cases in which primary amputation has been performed and review criteria used on decision making.
Method:
Retrospective, observational, and comparative study. From 1982 to 2019, 134 vascular trauma patients were treated. Seven patients who suffered primary mutilation, assessed by the Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS).
Results:
Seven patients with ages ranging from 8 to 63 years were treated. Three of them presented a MESS 11 score, while the other four patients had a MESS 12 score. Based on these scores, we decided to perform a primary amputation.
Conclusions:
Upon arrival patients must be assessed by a multidisciplinary board, and to communicate to the patient and/or the family the possibility that the affected limb could be amputated.
