This exploratory study shows the influence the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund on education in Mexico. It analyzes their ties to the establishment of regulatory assessment institutes and centers, as well as their participation in certain domestic and international instruments. It analyzes results from three tests, EXCALE 09, PLANEA and PISA, in which the reading performance of 15 year old students who were in their last year of lower secondary education or their first semester of upper-secondary studies. The article presents the test results to demonstrate educational attainment as well as the most common mistakes regarded as educational determinants. The article concludes with elements for improving teacher classroom performance.
