This article presents the results of an investigation on gender gap carried out in 10 coed secondary schools in Chile. Our aim is to analyze the factors that made it possible to improve language and reading learning in male students, thus reducing the gender gap. Qualitative methodology, multiple case study and integrated analysis were used in order to highlight similarities and differences. One of our central findings was that neither in the schools in which the gap was reduced, nor in those in which it was maintained or increased, these results can be attributed to institutional decisions, policies or practices focused on tackling gender gaps and inequities; moreover the schools that managed to reduce the reading gap reaffirm existing gender inequities by stimulating competition among male students and by instilling respect for school and family regulations.
