This article expands upon the issues found in the resignification of identity for indigenous and rural youth enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in the Universidad Nacional de Salta (National University of Salta) in Argentina. I aimed to delve into the processes of material and symbolic inequality experienced by this sector of the population enrolled in higher education. This can be observed in the discourse and practices they employ to attempt to create patterns of identity and behavior corresponding to urban and western characteristics. I take ethnography as my research basis to recover the voices of five students who identify as indigenous and/or rural and who have had to move to continue studying. Thus, from an interpretational, descriptive and collaborative perspective, I conclude these young people traverse complex networks of resignification of identity when they find themselves in scenarios that pit the idea of what is “proper” vs. the culture of the few.
