Results of a research focused on the diagnosis of the impact of retirement on the braking down of academic staff by age at higher education institutions are presented. The gap of income and the loss of benefits are the main factors giving rise to a delay on the exercising of the retirement right. As far as retirement conditions are concerned, it is mandatory to have a complementary retirement system with defined quoting, since experience indicates that adoption of such a scheme has been prevented due to the lack of trust in the authorities and communities, due to the absence of sufficient information and the scarcity of funds provided by institutions. Among the problems detected is the lack of appreciation for the advantages of retirement earlier in life.
