YANEZ ANDRADE, Juan Carlos. Workers Take Vacations. An Exploration of Social Tourism Programs during the Chilean Popular Front: 1938-1946. Secuencia [online]. 2023, n.115, e2003. Epub 17-Mar-2023. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i115.2003.
The objective of this article is to analyze a series of social tourism programs promoted during the Chilean Popular Front (1938-1946), that allowed a growing number of workers to have access to the experience of vacations and free time. An aspect to highlight is the role that the State, as well as the municipalities and entrepreneurs, played in the formulation of initiatives such as summer camps for workers. It ends with the General Direction of Information and Culture (1942) as a turning point in the formulation of social tourism programs. It is concluded that these actions promoted by the Popular Front governments were a step forward related to social inclusion policies for workers and served as a model for future social tourism programs in Chile.
