MONSIVAIS CARRILLO, Alejandro. Populism, authoritarian repertoires, and democratic subversion. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2023, vol.85, n.spe2, pp.11-38. Epub 30-Sep-2023. ISSN 2594-0651. https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2023.2ne.60980.
This text introduces the concept of authoritarian repertoire to explain how and when populism becomes a threat to democracy. Populism is the idea that politics is defined by moral antagonism between the people and the elite. This idea facilitates the subversion of democracy when personalist rulers use it in their quest for unlimited and unrestricted power. Populist rhetoric enables executives to deploy a repertoire of actions and strategies that violate democratic norms and force gradual regime autocratization.
