Resumen
HERNANDEZ-GUTIERREZ, José Carlos y DURO, Julia. Development dynamics, criminal violence, and electoral participation: An analysis in Mexico City and Chiapas. Perf. latinoam. [online]. 2024, vol.32, n.64, 00008. Epub 13-Sep-2024. ISSN 0188-7653. https://doi.org/10.18504/pl3264-008-2024.
The article examines the impact of criminal violence on electoral participation, considering the level of municipal human development. To achieve this, municipal elections in Mexico City (CDMX) and Chiapas are analysed during the period 2006-2018. It hypothesises that the association between electoral participation and homicide rates varies according to municipal human development. A quantitative methodology and a self-developed database are used to test this hypothesis. The results do not confirm that municipal human development moderates the relationship between criminal violence and electoral participation, which could be attributed to the complexity of contextual factors and dynamics specific to each area studied.
