Many Mexican students face severe changes in their passage from junior high to high school. One is their new status, with greater autonomy in their academic and nonacademic life. This article reports on the way a group of students at Colegio de Ciencias y Humanidades experienced such a process. Their stories reveal a pattern that starts at a distance from academic life (but not from school), and moves to a return that attaches new meaning to their studies: the exercise of freedom and responsibility. The analysis was based on autobiographical narrative interviews. The interpretation utilized concepts from the life course focus (trajectory, transition and turning point) that were particularly helpful in understanding data.
