This article presents an ethnographically oriented field research based on a narrative and interpretative analysis. The objective is to understand the emotional labor of a female teacher in her daily practice as a key feature in the reality of teaching. Through participant observation, in-depth interviews and focus groups, combined with the students' notes in a diary, the author analyze narratively the emotional effort carried out in a pedagogical practice linked to caring as a knowledge of experience, which occurs in a sociocultural context of violence and abandonment. The emotional labor of teachers is analyzed in concrete experiences, where caring becomes more complex in the teacher's disposition to discern, from the depths and in the otherness of conviviality, between the many school actors in the daily school. The results describe experiences of both caring and carelessness, articulated in the performativity of the emotional labor of teachers according to specific contextual and situational conditions.
