This paper focuses on the circumstances that have enabled the emergence of "female-headed households" in the homes of two localities in the municipality of Santiago Tangamandapio, Michoacán. It shows how women in these places achieved more visibility and prominence, which in many cases is not perceived by the women themselves. The paper also assesses how the participation of women in the labor force and their contribution to the household has increased thanks to changes in representations of what being and acting as a woman entails, because they are no longer devoted only to household and childcare, but building other representations of women as workers, leaders, or heads of households.
