The capture of the bluefin tuna by the Mexican tuna fleet off the coast of the Baja California peninsula was used by the local canning industry to produce nutritional food at low cost for the national market. However, in the last decade, with the arrival of investors, mainly Japanese, the destination of the catches changed. Currently this tuna is fished, fattened and exported to the Japanese and U.S. markets, which pay top prices for this species to satisfy their sashimi demand.This situation is making positive social and economic impacts in our country and in Japan. These impacts were documented by direct and indirect field work carried out for this investigation. During this project, some similarities between the behavior of the tuna ranching industry and the maquiladora industry were discovered, stimulating an interesting debate on the subject.
