The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the development and state of art in empirical research in family therapy. Psychotherapy research traditions: outcome studies, process and progress are reviewed. These traditions have been generating new trends of inquiry, such as studies on common and specific factors, effectiveness and efficacy of therapy and empirically validated treatments. After several decades of research have shown that family therapy is effective and efficacious. However, mechanisms by which change occurs are still a source of intense debate and research.
