Vertebrate animals used in experimental protocols are recognized as sentient, promoting their consideration within zooethic consideration, their protection in national and international legislation, and their welfare. This has led researchers to resort to other models, such as some invertebrate animals. However, except in particular cases, invertebrates do not have the same legal protection nor welfare provision because they are not recognized as sentient. A review of scientific articles (from 1997 to 2022) was carried out that examined sentience between the Mollusca, Arthropoda and Nematoda, phyla widely used as experimental models. Eighteen articles were found that confirmed a certain degree of sentience in these phyla. Therefore, we propose they should be included in the zooethical consideration. In addition, this text constitutes a first effort to promote the well-being of these individuals used in experimental procedures.
